Hello Michael, A Pedant is someone who likes to show off their knowledge. The dictionary says it is from Middle French, and lists 3 definitions: a male school teacher, one who parades his learning, or one who emphasizes trivial points in the presentation or use of knowledge. I think the description we might use for the last one is anal retentive, a psychological term that is found in popular usage today. A Sophist is an ancient Greek teacher of pholosophy, or a thinker, or a fallacious reasoner. Although, S-O-P-H indicates wise or expert, it also carries the meaning of deceptively clever. Sophisticated means cultured, knowledgeable or disillusioned, or something which has become more complex or developed. Sophomore which comes from the words for Wise and Moron in Greek, means a second year student, and sophomoric means foolish, or overconfident, but immature. I suspect these words all come from Sophicles, not Sophia as I originally thought. Must be a gender bias. See, ”For bourgeois and snotty-nosed college > students or older cynics who come to amalgamic conclusions in all ignorance Tuesday, December 2, 2008, 10:49:19 PM, you wrote: >

Hello Oscar, Yes, media reports can be upsetting. Actually, I believe that what is happening is the mounting of a public relations defense for Bush. It is quite easy for his supporters to fund some silly foundation and award him a ’first ever’ medal of peace. I will be writing, later today, on how Bush is saying ”I’m sorry for Iraq but I made the best choice with the intelligence I had at the time” and the bought and paid for media is ignoring the fact that all US intelligence agencies provided information which would prevent such decisions, but Cheney had set up a group to mold the facts around the decision and that is what Bush went with.
